NEW AND SHINEEEEEEE - even in the wind!

(photo showing a receeding Helm Wind ridge of cloud)

I'm sooooooooo happeeeeeee and loving life here at the hospice.  This is my favourite time of year because all around me there are new and shiney things happening.  The list is endless but here are a few new shiney things that I love...

I love that the grass is extra green and tastes so sweet as the leaves fill with plant sugars with new growth.

I love the bright almost luminious buds on the trees and how the leaves unfurl from small and crumpled to strong and shiney.

I love the cheep-cheeping from the birds nests as the eggs hatch.

I love watching the swallows swooping and dancing now that they are back for the summer.

I love watching the new residents as they grow in confidence and discover the joys of freedom.

I love that the crows perch on the donkeys backs and pluck out the old hair for their nests - and the donkeys let them until the crows start tweaking and pulling at manes & tails!

I love watching the garden birds gathering up small twigs and moss - and even the dog hair from Helpful Lady's grooming sessions!

I love the tree canopy that slowly develops to cast wonderous shadows on the hotest of days.

I love the rustling of the leaves when the wind gently blows and I love the dancing shadows that are there to be chased and pounced on.

I love the volunteers with their treat filled pockets.

I love to see the surrounding fields fill with bleeting baaa-lambs and mmmm-e mmmm-e ewes.

I love to see the calves, new with shiney bright eyes, gambolling in the next door fields with legs that seems too long and they have to practice running to gain strength and co-ordination.

I love the workmen who are repairing the storm damage because they sometimes share cuddles and treats.

If anything can stop me smiling with bright eyes then it might be the Helm Wind.   For those who don't know about the Helm, it's a very strong north-easterly wind that in olden times, was said to pull turnips out the ground.  It's unique to part of Cumbria and when it blows it does so continuously for days and days.  When it blew for 3 days last week, I was forced to stop smiling and had to keep my eyes shut because of all the dust and grit flying through the air! On top of that, I couldn't hear ANYTHING other than the howling wind!    At least I had a nice kennel to snuggle in whereas My Mam & Helpful Lady had to be out in it!.

But The Helm isn't all bad - I do love the way it sweeps everything clean - all the loose dirt, old straw, hay, leaves, twigs, feathers and such like, is blown into big heaps and me & my friends get to roll and play in the heaps and we have such great fun!!!  (I think it's The Helm's way of saying sorry for blowing grit in my eyes.)

Bye for now.   Love Toto x
